R.B. Stevenson Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition “Forest for the Trees” by San Diego artists Stephen P. Curry and Jeff Irwin. We cordially invite you to the opening reception on Saturday October 24th from 5 to 8pm. Stephen and Jeff have been working with nature and trees in particular for this exhibition. Both artists have been included in group and solo exhibitions at the gallery.
Curry’s new series of paintings explores the complex and increasingly fragile relationship between the natural world, human society, and a changing climate. Trees serve not only as formal structures that shape composition, but as majestic witnesses to how we inhabit and imagine our planet. They represent the impact of decisions that have been made in the name of progress and an uncertain future. These paintings begin from a combination of photographic references gathered through travel, observation, and memory, then evolve and transform through layered paint applications and reimagination. The work grows from a lifelong fascination with trees and the outdoors, and from a deep personal connection to the places and environments they inhabit. Through these paintings, Curry considers what trees might reveal about our presence on the planet, and what we have inherited from the natural world.
